WITCHES UNDERMINE YONNI TOWN MARKET DEVELOPMENT EFFORTS

Hassan Juana Koroma in Pujehun

In a surprising turn of events, witchcraft activities have reportedly taken over again at Yonni town Market, Kpanga chiefdom Pujehun District causing traders to abandon their tables and resort to selling their goods to their verandas.

Despite earlier attempts at revitalization, the market has reverted to its previous state, which locals claim has been occupied by witches for over two decades.

Earlier this year, over 32 million old Leones were presented to the market women by the Executive Director of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Andrew Jiah Kaikai to revitalize the market.

To the dismay of the public, the market has once again become a battlefield for witchcraft activities, with traders preferring to sell their goods from the comfort of their verandas.

The Chairlady of the Market, Nyapo Kpaka expressed gratitude to Andrew Jiah Kaikai's efforts but revealed that the notion of witches occupying the market has been prevalent for over 20 years. Locals believe that the market, which was constructed by the late former Member of Parliament, Hon Ansu Kaikai,  has fallen victim to the influence of witchcraft.

Stakeholders in the district are growing increasingly frustrated with the attitude of the market sellers, who have neglected the very market for which millions of Leones were spent during its establishment.  The stakeholders had hoped that the market would serve as a hub for economic activities and provide better trading opportunities for both sellers and buyers.

Considering these recent developments, local authorities are urged to take immediate action to investigate the alleged witchcraft activities and restore the market to its intended purpose. The residents of Yonni town eagerly await a resolution to this long-standing issue.
