BY: ABDUL MARTINS FODAY AMARA.

The Teachers Registration and Licensures examination commenced in the entire nation on Tuesday, 30 January 2024. The Teaching Service Commission conducted it and eventually ended it on Sunday, 4 February 2024, at the district office in Kenema.

Dwelling on the importance of the examination for the teaching profession, the regional boss of the commission, Tamba Sivicco Bockarie, said the commission had been mandated by the 2023 act of Parliament Subsection 58 of the Education Act that every teacher must acquire a license to trade in the profession henceforth or not allowed to teach at all if without.

The regional boss reiterated that the commission aims to upgrade the teaching profession to match international standards as times change.

Mr. Bockarie revealed that up to 84% accounted for teachers’ turnout for the exercise even though it's a new phenomenon in the country, a situation he described as encouraging for the first phase.

He maintained that the teachers' turnout for the examination is not unconnected to the excellent rapport between the Commission and the media landscape in the district, adding that they are relating very well.

Sivicco stated that applying online, screening and examination was easy and cost-free.

He appealed to the remaining teachers who did not attempt for the first phase to grab the opportunity for the second phase coming soonest.

The headquarters assigned monitor for the exercise, which doubles as the AG, is Mrs. Ophelia Morisson, Director of the Teacher Development and Performance Department, who stayed at the center from start to crash.

Mrs. Ophelia Morisson shared a similar sentiment about the importance of teachers acquiring registration and licenses for the profession, noting that it will enhance their credentials and leadership opportunities.

She said that after collecting some of the challenges that ensued in the process, she would present her report to the headquarters so that the commission could work on the recommendations as we advanced.

She said that although the turnout of teachers in Kenema District did not match up with other districts in the country, it was very encouraging for the first time in its history.

She pleaded with the female teachers to grab the opportunity as they already have a 30% quota given by the government of Sierra Leone, adding that it must be utilized to the fullest. The exercise was segmented into three batches per day and 2 hours per batch she maintained.
