SOLDIER TEAM ENGAGES IN MASSIVE CLEANSING OF KUSH ADDICTS IN PORT LOKO DISTRICT

 Kadijatu Hayles in Lungi

In a bold and commendable move, the Soldier Team Clique has undertaken a significant campaign to address the issue of rampant drug addiction among the youth in Port Loko District. The group, previously known for its involvement in various violent activities, has shifted its focus towards reforming and contributing to the development of the district.

The movement to cleanse addicts was initiated yesterday in Lungi at the Rotifunk junction, a hotspot for drug-related activities. The Soldier Team Clique, comprised of young boys and men, raided the ghettos in search of drug addicts. Once apprehended, the addicts were taken to the junction, where their heads were shaved and they were washed. This act was accompanied by a powerful message conveying the harmful effects of drugs on their health.

Mohamed Alimamy Kamara, the CEO of Soldier Team in Port Loko District, highlighted the detrimental impact of drugs on the aspirations of young people. He expressed concern over the fact that many of their childhood friends, with whom they started schooling, have fallen victim to drug addiction, leading to a bleak future for them.

Kamara revealed that the movement commenced yesterday, and already more than 50 male and female young people have undergone the shaving and washing process. The act of shaving their heads serves as a symbolic gesture, indicating that they have been reached out to and counseled. To deter relapse, individuals found in the ghettos again will receive three strokes of the cane as a reminder that such environments are not conducive to their well-being. Kamara acknowledged the difficulty in tracing the drug dealers, most of whom are not residents of the district.

Continuing his explanation, Kamara outlined the plan to provide a safe space for these young addicts for a period of three months. They will be offered nutritious food, healthcare facilities, and motivational talks during this time. The ultimate goal is to reintegrate them into society as transformed individuals. However, Kamara expressed concern about the lack of resources to implement this plan fully.

Kamara further stated that after Lungi, their efforts will extend to other chiefdoms within the district through effective networking with other youths in those areas. The Soldier Team Clique aims to collaborate with local communities to address the drug addiction crisis comprehensively.

In his advice to young people, Kamara emphasized that kush is a deadly vice that hinders their personal and professional growth. He urged them to renounce drug use and instead focus on improving their careers. Drawing from his personal experience, Kamara shared his own transformation journey, highlighting how he has become a change agent in the communities.

The venture undertaken by the Soldier Team Clique is commendable, as kush addiction poses a significant threat to the nation's workforce. Without concerted efforts to address this issue, there is a risk of having more dependents than active contributors to society.

The Port Loko District community applauds the Soldier Team's initiative, hoping that their campaign will inspire other individuals and organizations to join forces in tackling the pervasive problem of drug addiction among the youth.
