SIERRA LEONEAN-BORN AMERICAN RETURNS HOME TO BOOST FEED 'SALONE' INITIATIVE

By Abdul Martins Foday Amara

The Master Farmer and Chief Executive Officer of the Makaya Agricultural Farmers Center, Mr Mohamed Moiwoh Makaya Junior, has disclosed in an exclusive with AIMNet Newspaper that he has returned home to mechanized farming to support the government's agenda, the "Feed Salone" initiative.

Mohamed Moiwo Makaya Junior is a Sierra Leonean American resident who is also a native of Kenema District. His father, the former honourable Mohamed Moiwoh Makaya Senior, was the first SLPP district chairman during the leadership of the late president Tejan Kabba, who is of blessed memory. He tremendously contributed to the development of the district.

According to Mohamed Moiwoh Makaya junior, the Makaya Agricultural Center, situated along Talia Makaya highway, is 120 acres of farm land currently underutilized for multiple livelihood activities, which has created lots of job opportunities for young people and even the elderly within the operational communities.

He disclosed that he had invested so much money into fish ponds, poultry, a bakery, and machines for IVS farming. He added that communities around the Makaya Agricultural Center and Kenema, by extension, are now enjoying their own fresh eggs, bread, rice cakes, birthday cakes, and wedding cakes all from the bakery, sweet fish from the fish pond, and soon, they will start to enjoy a new variety of process rice from IVS farming.

He concluded by calling on farmers to come to the center for any farming support ranging from brushing and planting to harvesting on a cost recovery basis.

Eggs from poultry are also now available at an affordable price, and it is a local harvest with high demand for now only at wholesale by a cartoon. He said he wants to make sure that young people are in productive use instead of being misused through politics and drugs.

Mohamed Makaya is, therefore, calling on other Sierra Leoneans across the globe to come home and help rebuild our nation. Politics and government alone cannot do it all alone, but with all hands on the development table, we can do it. Also, he is looking up to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security for incorporation into the Feed Salone initiative.

People in Kenema District and beyond have lavished praise on him for being the first person to start such a laudable venture. They also pray that God, the government, and partners will soon turn their attention to the farm and add more value to it.
