By Morlai Sesay

The Sierra Leone Tug of War Association is set to make its mark on the international stage as it sends two formidable teams, the senior men’s team and the U-19 team, to compete in the World Indoor Championship scheduled from February 7th to 11th, 2024, in Helsingborg, Sweden.

The World Indoor Championship, organized by the Tug of War International Federation (TWIF), is a prestigious event that sees national teams from across the globe vying for glory. This competition held biennially since 2014, stands as one of the premier global events in the sport alongside the TWIF Outdoor World Championships.

Coach Sonny Johnson affirmed that both Sierra Leone teams have undergone rigorous training for several months, dedicating time at the peace gym and on the beaches in anticipation of this championship.

The senior team from Sierra Leone is geared up for the 680kg category, while the U-19 team is poised for the 560kg category. Remarkably, Sierra Leone and Nigeria are the sole representatives from Africa competing in this five-day championship.

Osman Koroma, popularly known as Kosombo and the reigning champion of the strongest man competition, emphasized the team’s determination to raise Sierra Leone’s flag higher in Sweden. Despite it being their first outing, the team is resolute in making an impactful debut on the international platform.

The Ministry of Sports and the National Sports Authority have diligently facilitated the necessary documentation through the Foreign Affairs office. This concerted effort ensures the association’s delegation has all essential documents. The team is expected to depart this week for Monrovia to secure visas before heading to Sweden for the Championship.

As Sierra Leone prepares to showcase its prowess in Tug of War on a global scale, the anticipation and determination within the teams reflect the country’s commitment to achieving success and leaving an indelible mark in the world of sports.
