POLICE INVESTIGATE DROWNING CASE OF 20-YEAR-OLD

By Kadijatu Hayles in Lungi

The Lungi Police Division is currently investigating the alleged drowning case of 20-year-old Mohamed Sesay at the Conakry Dee wharf in Lungi's Kaffubullom Chiefdom. Mohamed Sesay, a fisherman from the Yongro community, was on a fishing trip with a boat owner known as Obai Sesay, commonly referred to as "8and9."

According to Ibrahim Bafe Conteh, the Harbour Master of the Conakry Dee wharf in Kaffubullom Chiefdom, he received a distress call from the youths at the wharf on the early morning of January 16th. They informed him about a body found along the beach. Conteh promptly alerted the police, and the deceased's body was taken to the Lungi Government Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Several arrests were made, including the fiancé of the deceased.

Conteh stated that the family of the deceased, who had traveled from Yongro, insisted on a post-mortem examination. They had reservations about the circumstances surrounding Mohamed Sesay's death. According to Conteh, information he gathered suggested that Sesay had gone scooping in the early hours of January 16th and was found dead. This marks the second drowning case in 2024 related to scooping incidents. Conteh emphasized that there have been no reported drownings resulting from fishing activities. From now on, individuals engaging in scooping must have a companion for swift rescue in case of emergencies.

Kolonen Bangura, the deceased's aunt and sister to his biological mother, spoke to Aim Net News and described Mohamed Sesay as a promising young man who had recently taken his West Africa Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination. She mentioned that Sesay had a fiancé named Sampa Sankoh, who possessed knowledge about fishing. Bangura attempted to discourage Sesay from fishing and encouraged him to focus on his studies, but he persisted. She expressed doubts about the drowning incident, mentioning that Obai Sesay, with whom Mohamed was living, is currently missing and on the run. Bangura stated that she does not believe that her nephew drowned, but the police are conducting a thorough investigation.

Abass Osman Kargbo, the Information Officer of the Lungi Police Division, confirmed that the deceased was discovered along the Conakry Dee beach and subsequently taken to the Lungi Government Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Kargbo added that the body was later released to the family for burial while investigations into the matter are ongoing.

The Lungi Police Division is dedicated to uncovering the truth behind Mohamed Sesay's tragic drowning, and they are working diligently to bring clarity to the circumstances surrounding his untimely demise.
