OVER 60,000 ‘WAKA FINE’ BUS TICKETS SOLD IN LESS THAN A WEEK- Chief Minister

By Morlai Sesay

The Chief Minister of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Dr. David Moinina Sengeh, shares promising updates on the thriving “Waka Fine” public transportation system, revealing that an impressive over 60,000 bus tickets have been swiftly secured by people in Freetown since its inauguration on January 29th, 2024.

To further facilitate the transition to the new system, the government of Sierra Leone generously allowed citizens in Freetown to enjoy free rides on the “Waka Fine” buses for three days, from January 30th to February 1st, 2024. This initiative aimed to familiarize the public with the new transportation option and encourage adoption.

Starting February 2nd, citizens began paying a nominal fee of le 10 for any destination within Freetown’s Eastern and Western corridors. This signifies the official implementation of fare charges for the “Waka Fine” buses, marking a significant step towards sustaining this modernized public transportation system.

The Chief Minister expressed his satisfaction with the overwhelming response from ‘Freetonians,’ highlighting the 60,000 tickets purchased on February 2nd as a testament to the community’s readiness to embrace the “Waka Fine” buses as their preferred mode of transportation.

Moreover, Sengeh clarified that while the “Waka Fine” buses are a pivotal component of public transportation, taxis are still permitted to operate within the designated corridors. This strategic decision ensures diverse transportation options, catering to the citizens’ varied needs and preferences.

As Sierra Leone continues to invest in enhancing its public infrastructure, the success of the “Waka Fine” buses reflects a positive stride towards more efficient and accessible transportation services for the people of Freetown.
