The National Democratic Institute (NDI) has commenced a two-day intensive training program for women councilors and the Pujehun District Council administrative officers.

The training at the Rural Water Office in Pujehun aims to enhance female councilors' capacity to promote inter-party cohesion and address political differences to support and advance women's participation in governance.

Addressing the women councilors and other stakeholders, Jinnah Nyallay, the Programme Officer of the National Democratic Institute, emphasized the importance of fostering collaboration among political parties. He highlighted the need for the councilors to work together to address political issues and promote women's active involvement in governance.

The Chairman of the Pujehun District Council expressed his appreciation for the training, referring to it as a "blessing in disguise" for the female councilors. He acknowledged the previous training the councilors had undergone and noted that this new program would further enhance their understanding of council operations. The chairman also emphasized the value of continuous refresher training to keep councilors abreast of council activities.

Madam Juliana Jah, the Youth and Sport Committee Chairperson, conveyed her enthusiasm for the training, affirming the councilors' commitment to diligently serving their constituents. She pledged to approach the training with the utmost seriousness it deserves, recognizing its significance in empowering them to represent their communities effectively.

The lead facilitator of the training, Layemin Joe Sandi, a former mayor of the Bonthe Municipal Council, urged the participants to seize the opportunity and give their best effort. He emphasized the pivotal role of councilors as bridges between the communities they serve and the local council.

Mr. Sandi stressed that the training would be interactive and cover various topics, including introducing local councils, functions of local council committees and meetings, development planning and budgeting, collaborative community engagement, and feedback collection.

The National Democratic Institute's initiative to engage women councilors in ineffective council procedures is a proactive step towards promoting inclusive governance and empowering women in decision-making. By equipping these councilors with the necessary knowledge and skills, the NDI aims to strengthen their capacity to contribute to community development and bridge the gap between citizens and local government, enabling them to serve as effective leaders and champions of women's rights and empowerment. As they apply their newfound knowledge and skills, the Pujehun District Council's women councilors are poised to significantly contribute to the socio-political landscape and drive positive change at the grassroots level.
