By Morlai Sesay

To boost domestic tourism in Sierra Leone, the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, in collaboration with critical stakeholders, officially declared February as a month of travel and hospitality in 2024. This initiative, part of the year-long “Tourism for All” campaign, aims to raise awareness of Sierra Leone’s rich cultural heritage and natural beauty. According to the Ministry of Tourism, the month-long celebration commenced on February 1st and will continue until February 29th, 2024.

The “Travel & Hospitality” campaign encourages Sierra Leoneans to explore their own country, fostering a sense of pride and ownership while contributing to the sustainable development of local communities. Throughout February, residents and visitors can partake in various activities showcasing the nation’s diverse attractions.

The campaign includes special tour packages, guided cultural heritage tours, nature trail hikes, beach festivals, and culinary events highlighting local cuisines. These thoughtfully curated events offer participants a comprehensive experience of Sierra Leone’s historical landmarks and picturesque landscapes.

The collaboration involves the Ministry, the National Tourist Board, and the Monuments and Relics Commission, emphasizing a unified commitment to promoting domestic tourism and its potential to drive socio-economic progress. Additionally, the campaign aims to educate the public on preserving Sierra Leone’s cultural and natural heritage.

Stakeholders from the hospitality industry, including hotels, restaurants, and tour operators, have pledged their support for the campaign. They offer special promotions and packages to make exploring Sierra Leone more accessible.

The Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs expressed enthusiasm about the campaign, stating that they are excited to launch this landmark campaign to highlight Sierra Leone’s beauty and diversity. The Ministry noted, “Domestic tourism is a vital component of our overall strategy to develop and sustain our tourism industry, and we are proud to be working with our partners to make it a success.”

Commenting on the achievements of the Ministry, it is updated that in the year 2023 Global Peace Index, Sierra Leone was ranked 3rd in sub-Saharan Africa and 47th globally as a peaceful nation. Moreover, "our nation topped the charts as the 1st country in the world for the highest proportion of people (83%) who helped someone they did not know and secured 3rd spot for the top countries to volunteer. Additionally, Sierra Leone was recognized as the 7th most generous country in the world in the most recent World Giving Index (2022)".

The Ministry encourages foreigners to reminisce and reflect on Sierra Leone's rich history at the National Museum, Cotton Tree, National Railway Museum in Cline Town, and Peace Museum at the Special Court.

"You may also want to pass by Big Market in Freetown to purchase some kontri cloth, gara, and ronko's, all original patterns and products of Sierra Leone. Enjoy the warm reception and smiles that greet you everywhere in Sierra Leone, the land we love. Foster positive connections with places and people in Sierra Leone. You deserve some leisure time. Do not let the month end without visiting somewhere, and please share your story to inspire others, " she encourages.
