KONO DISTRICT YOUTH OFFICER WARNS YOUTH AGAINST ‘KUSH’ INTAKE

The District Youth Officer attached to the Ministry of Youth Affairs in Kono District, Augusta M. Bockarie, has revealed that Kush substance is an enemy to the youth.  She said they had recorded high cases of negative impacts of the substance on the lives of young people across the country, which has seriously affected the young potential youths in the district and the country as a whole.

 " I will tell you for free: Kush substance is an enemy of the youth. We have recently lost many youths, and it has deformed many that they can no longer be useful and acceptable in society, " she said.

Speaking to AimNet Newspaper, she disclosed that Kush strains are often associated with strong sedative effects, which could make users feel relaxed or even sleepy.

She further stated that individuals, particularly the Youth who are addicted to its strains, may face a heightened risk of developing health problems such as anxiety disorders, depression, or even psychosis. This risk is especially for those with their families.

Augusta M. Bockarie urged the Government of Sierra Leone to stop the importation of ‘Kush’ into the country. She also called for an active policy against Kush taking in the country.

She equally called for more education and public awareness campaigns against Kush. With such education, she said the intake of ‘Kush’ and its negative impact could be minimized.

 

 Augusta M Bockarie intimated that the Ministry and its partners had undertaken several activities against the Kush to curtail it in the district, like school-to-school sensitization.

" I have worked closely with the local authorities, Community leaders, school authorities, health providers, and even youth organizations to develop a coordinated approach to address Kush in the district," she maintained.
