In response to the absence of Resident Magistrate Abdul Carew in the Pujehun Judicial District, the Judiciary of Sierra Leone has swiftly taken action to ensure the smooth functioning of the justice system. Magistrate Carew, reportedly unwell and seeking medical attention in the United States of America, has been temporarily replaced by a roving resident magistrate.

The leadership of the Judiciary, recognizing the urgency of the situation, has directed the activation of the Justice of the Peace (JP's) Court immediately. The JP's Court will handle all minor matters outside of Preliminary Investigations (PI's), providing an interim solution to prevent a backlog of cases.

To further address the absence of Magistrate Carew, His Worship George Edwin, the Resident Magistrate in Bo, has been assigned to preside over court proceedings in Pujehun. Starting Monday, January 15, 2024, Magistrate Edwin will conduct court sittings in Pujehun for at least a week, primarily focusing on Preliminary Investigations. Following this initial period, he will return to Pujehun within seven days to continue the proceedings until the substantive Magistrate Carew returns or another magistrate is deployed to the district.

The Judiciary of Sierra Leone emphasizes its commitment to meeting the justice sector's requirements and ensuring that the public's needs are met and satisfied. By promptly addressing the absence of the resident magistrate, the judiciary aims to minimize disruptions and maintain the effective functioning of the court system in Pujehun.

This proactive approach demonstrates the judiciary's dedication to upholding the principles of justice and providing access to legal remedies for all citizens. The temporary assignment of a roving resident magistrate and the activation of the JP's Court underlines the judiciary's commitment to ensuring that legal matters in Pujehun are addressed promptly and efficiently.

The public can be assured that despite the absence of Magistrate Carew, the judiciary is actively working to uphold the rule of law and ensure justice is served. By implementing these measures, the Judiciary aims to alleviate any concerns and maintain the justice system's smooth operation until the resident magistrate's return or the deployment of a new magistrate in the district.
