HON. FOFANAH CALLS FOR HOLISTIC APPROACH TO END ‘KUSH’ EPIDEMIC

By Morlai Sesay

In a bid to contain what is considered to be a deadly virus in the country, Honorable members of Parliament have unanimously set up a bipartisan committee with the objective of eradicating Kush and other harmful drugs in the country, calling on authorities to rein on the manufacturers, importers, and distributors of the lethal drug, (Kush).

In his address, Hon. Mohamed T. Fofanah mentioned that stringent measures need to be taken against people who are the importers of ‘kush’ and other harmful drugs into the country, citing that there should be no sacred cow in embarking on such a fight.

Hon. Fofanah emphasized the need for concerted action at national, regional, and international levels to deal effectively with the manufacturers, distributors, and marketers of deadly drugs across borders. He acknowledged that the  youths would  only use the drugs when they are available; therefore, he reiterated the urgent need for new policies from the government and legislation from Parliament to end the new  epidemic

Hon. Fofanah, in a heavy heart, explained, “This is an issue that is very close to our hearts. We have decided to set up bipartisan cooperation to fight this issue. As the chairman said, we are going to convey in a very blossoming meeting how to continue this fight.  We know that there are people who are living luxurious lives at the expense of other people who are dying. Some people are driving brand-new cars at the expense of families who are crying over the death of their children’’. He said.

Hon. Fofanah continued that there are those who are riding first-class flights to go overseas at the expense of ‘Mammy Fatmata’ who is crying because her son is dying due to the effect of ‘Kush’.

Hon. Fofanah assured the public that they are determined as the people’s representatives to get to the bottom of this issue.’ This is just the beginning’!

He added that if a radical approach is not taken to address the ‘Kush’ menace, the issue would escalate and become a severe threat to the country’s national security and the future of the nation.

As the bipartisan committee is being set up, Sierra Leoneans are calling on all relevant committees of Parliament to work together and propose prompt and effective measures to stem the tide. A delay in taking such progressive action is bound to compound the problem, making it even more dangerous and eventually consuming the whole country.

The greatest remedy to such an alarming crisis is obviously to start taking action within the country because a stitch in time, they say, saves nine.
