The German Surgical mission, which aimed to provide critical surgeries to those in need, concluded the treatment of free surgery at Choithrams Hospital on Monday, 22nd January 2024. The generous mission allowed over 300 individuals to undergo screenings at Choithrams Memorial Hospital in Freetown, with 90 meeting the criteria for free surgical operations conducted by a specialized team of German surgeons.
Harish Agnani, Chairman and Financial Controller of Choithram Group of Companies in Sierra Leone, addressed the media during the conference. He explained that the initiative was coordinated by Dr. Bayoh, Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to Germany. Agnani expressed gratitude for the support and highlighted the collaboration with Dr. Bayoh, noting his pivotal role in overcoming challenges and ensuring the mission’s success.
Despite the team’s imminent departure, Agnani revealed that two members would stay for an extra week to conduct follow-ups on patients. The German doctors completed 60 surgeries out of the planned 90, with Dr. George, the medical superintendent, providing detailed insights into the operations during the conference. Emphasizing the dedication of the hospital staff, Dr. George highlighted the collaboration that extended beyond surgeries, including training local doctors to ensure sustained medical care.
Dr. Gordon Harris underscored the importance of diversity in experience and expressed satisfaction with the collaboration. The team, comprising plastic surgeons, trauma surgeons, physiotherapists, and others, showcased a diverse skill set that contributed to the mission’s success.
Lead surgeon Dr. Lutz Gruhi acknowledged the collaborative effort between the German and local hospital staff, praising the local team’s discipline and organization. He attributed the success not only to medical expertise but also to cooperation with the local community.
In a follow-up session, medical personnel and hospital staff expressed gratitude for the collaboration’s impact on patient care. Surgeries, conducted at no cost to the patients, were made possible through the Truth and Medical Foundation in partnership with the hospital.
The German team, committed to understanding local conditions, expressed their dedication to follow-ups, ensuring the long-term success of the surgeries. The mission concluded with the doctors planning to explore Sierra Leone's hinterlands to better understand patients’ living conditions. The press conference provided an overview of a successful medical mission, highlighting international collaboration and the dedication of medical professionals to improving healthcare in Freetown.
