In an exclusive interview with Radio Democracy 98.1 evening Krio news program, Francis Trevor Samura, Chairman of Cricket Sierra Leone, highlighted the organization’s journey through 2023, citing a blend of achievements and obstacles that marked the year.
Samura confirmed that Cricket Sierra Leone witnessed significant success in 2023 as the teams participated in six international competitions, spanning from U-19 to senior categories. He lauded the remarkable performances across these matches, highlighting the outstanding achievements of the men’s Patriots team in the high-performance category.
These international competitions served as crucial stepping stones for the team’s growth domestically. Samura emphasized the importance of increased involvement in domestic competitions, a prerequisite for qualification into ICC events.
Expanding on financial matters, Samura expressed pride in the revenue generation efforts of the board, marking a milestone after thirteen years. He noted a substantial increase in revenue generation from non-ICC sources, reaching 57%, a strategic move aimed at diversifying financial support for Cricket Sierra Leone.
Looking ahead to 2024/2025, Samura expressed determination to build upon the achievements of 2023, aligning with the international body’s criteria and focusing on coaches, umpires, playing pitches, and staff.
Samura highlighted the international body’s scrutiny on various aspects, including the senior National male Patriots’ matches, Elite Cricket League, Division One for both categories and the representation of female teams. He affirmed the Federation’s commitment to reaching new heights in the upcoming year.
Discussing challenges faced in 2023, Samura acknowledged governance issues that strained the Cricket family. He praised the instrumental roles played by the National Sports Authority and the Ministry in restoring peace within the organization amidst structural concerns raised by certain boards.
As Cricket Sierra Leone navigates through the successes and challenges of the past year, Samura reassured a dedicated effort to overcome hurdles and drive the sport toward greater accomplishments in the years to come.
