COUNCILORS IN KENEMA WRITE LOCAL GOVERNMENT MINISTRY

By Abdul Martins Foday Amara

The councilors of Kenema City Council have written a position letter and addressed it to the Chairman of the Local Government Committee in the well of Parliament.

According to the letter, the nineteen elected Councillors do not approve or are frowning at certain rumors going around regarding the transfer of the current Chief Administrator (CA) of the Kenema City Council, G. T. Gando. The letter requested that whatever plans the local government ministry is having to transfer the C. A and other core staff should be stopped. And that any action to transfer G.T. Gando will be seen as unfortunate by the Local Government Commission (LGSc).

According to them, the current Chief Administrator has laid the foundation in terms of development, and any attempt to transfer him will be an impediment to the development of the city. Also, the MOP TAX is their baby project and the C. A and core staff have the capability to make it sustainable as they are in the pilot phase.

Further, the letter clearly stated that they would not accept the transfer of the CA and other core staff that were posted to the Council until they see that the MOP TAX Initiative is successful and sustainable. Thereby saying that any new posting will only lead to chaos in the Kenema City Council.

The councilors clearly believed that the idea of changing the Chief Administrator had been masterminded by the current Mayor, His worship Thomas Karimu Bayoh because for a while now, there has existed a fragile relationship between the two leaders of the Council and also other Councillors.

The public opined that the Councillors should focus on making position statements on other developmental human interest issues going on within the city. Because it is clearly spelled out in the Local Government Act that Chief Administrators and core staff can be transferred as and when necessary.
