Hassan Juana Koroma in Pujehun

As the world was celebrating the Birth of Jesus Christ, on December 25th, 2023, Ibrahim Fallay, a 35-year-old man at  Koduwahun Village Barry Chiefdom Pujehun District, committed suicide by hanging himself on a rubber tree.

The action of Ibrahim Fallay to commit suicide sent shockwaves through the village, prompting a swift response from local authorities.

According to reports received by one Mustapha Koroma, who went in search of firewood at the Shegay bush,  stumbled upon Fallay's lifeless body hanging.  At the scene, he said he discovered the corpse completely discomposed with maggots hanging on a rubber tree with his shirt wrapped around his neck on a green nylon rope, wearing a long trouser, and both feet completely on the ground.

Mohamed wasted no time but to alert the Sierra Leone police, who responded to the distress call and promptly arrived at the scene. Upon initial investigations, it was revealed further that on that fait full, the deceased Ibrahim Fallay harvested and stole several groundnuts from her mother's garden. It was reported to his uncle Sao Kamada, who interviewed the deceased two days before his disappearance and stated that he harvested the groundnuts to pay his transport fees to Freetown.

However,  the community became aware of the theft, which brought about immense shame and pressure for Fallay, who was considered a role model within the village. Fallay could not withstand the provocation and committed suicide. The body of Ibrahim Fallay has since been examined by a Community Health Officer (CHO), Dauda Yankuba.

Local authorities in the village have expressed condolences to Fallay’s family and pledged their support during this difficult time. The memory of Ibrahim Fallay will not be forgotten, and his death will catalyze ongoing conversations about mental health and the importance of support networks in Koduwahun Village and beyond.

Crime officer in  Pujehun police division  Inspector Kpaka said the suicide of Ibrahim Fallay served as a stark reminder of the silent struggles that individuals face even during festive occasions. He highlighted the need for greater efforts in promoting mental well-being and ensuring that individuals have access to appropriate support systems.

Inspector Kpaka disclosed that the following people, Hawa Kpaka (Mother), Sao Kamada (uncle), Tenneh Kallon (aunt), and Jinnah Swaray (sister), are helping the police with investigations.

Meanwhile, the corpse was handed over to the town chief, Pa Amara Mustapha, and their family for burial and to mark the grave site for possible exhumation. Snapshots of the scene were taken, and the investigation is in progress.
