The Secretary General for the Union of African Traditional Sports and Games, Chief Shamsu Mustapha represented Sierra Leone at the Sporting Chance Forum (SCF23) held in Geneva, Switzerland. The event, which took place from December 5th to 8th, 2023, was organised with support from UNESCO and aimed to gather all stakeholders in the sports ecosystem to discuss the future of sports and human rights.
SCF23, coinciding with the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and the 5th anniversary of the Centre for Sport and Human Rights (CSHR), was officially part of the United Nations Human Rights 75 initiative. The forum explored innovative strategies and new forms of collective action to promote respect for human rights in the world of sports. Commitments made at SCF23 will contribute to shaping the responsible sports landscape in the coming decades.
Organised by the Centre for Sport and Human Rights, SCF23 was co-hosted by the International Labour Organization, the UN Human Rights Office, the United Nations Office in Geneva, and the Government of Switzerland, with support from the Open Society Foundations.
Chief Mustapha, speaking about the forum, highlighted that it brought together sports and human rights activists, donor organisations, and international sports federations.
Before returning to Sierra Leone, Chief Mustapha, along with former Sierra Leone Basketball player Oladipo Robin Coker, engaged with basketball institutions in Lausanne and Basel to mobilise support for the Sierra Leone Basketball Federation under the leadership of Ali Hyjazi.
