79-YEAR-OLD MAN MINES STONE FOR SURVIVAL IN PUJEHUN

 Hassan Juana Koroma in Pujehun

Life is no easy feat for 79-year-old Brima Sondai, who has embarked on stone mining to survive.

Speaking from his quarry Site, Yekandor Village Kpanga Chiefdom Pujehun district, Sondai expressed his determination to earn a living and provide for his family despite the challenges he encounters in this laborious pursuit.

Sondai, an elderly man, decided to venture into stone mining to secure a better life for himself and his loved ones. However, he has expressed frustration over the dangers of breaking the stones, particularly when dealing with iron stones that require cracking.

Acknowledging the risks associated with his age and the physical demands of the work, Brima Sondai appealed to the government, through the council, for assistance in acquiring proper working tools.

He emphasized that the lack of appropriate equipment poses a significant challenge in carrying out his work effectively and safely.

In addition to the technical obstacles, Sondai's Daughter-in-law, Mariama, shed light on the difficulties faced by women in participating in such laborious activities. She described fetching stones for mining as daunting and frustrating, highlighting the scarcity of women in this type of work.

Pa Sondai's plight highlights the struggles faced by individuals in marginalized communities. Limited economic opportunities often compel elderly citizens to engage in physically demanding work to sustain themselves and their families.

The story reminds us of the urgent need for government intervention to support vulnerable members of society. Brima Sondai’s appeal for assistance in obtaining adequate working tools is a call to action for local authorities to address the needs of individuals in similar circumstances.

Providing the necessary support to Sondai and others in his situation would alleviate their hardships and demonstrate a commitment to ensuring the welfare and dignity of all citizens, regardless of age.

As this news reaches the public, it is hoped that it will raise awareness about the challenges faced by elderly individuals like Brima Sondai and prompt the government and relevant organizations to extend a helping hand. By doing so, they can make a tangible difference in the lives of those who have dedicated their lives to hard work and now find themselves struggling against the odds in their twilight years.
